Preparation for a wide range of tasks in an international environment

With intercultural coaching, you will be supported by a personal coach who will cater to your needs. Using special techniques, exercises and examples, you will learn how to communicate, negotiate and interact better in intercultural situations and thus improve your intercultural competence.

  • Sensitisation to cultural differences and similarities:
Intercultural coaching teaches you to adopt different perspectives. This enables you to better understand behaviours and situations and adapt your behaviour accordingly to avoid misunderstandings or conflicts.
  • Improved communication:
Familiarising yourself with different communication styles and finding an appropriate way of communicating in intercultural situations is an essential part of international cooperation. Intercultural coaching improves your communication by enabling you to better understand and respond to the needs and expectations of your international colleagues.
  • Expand your cultural understanding:
Intercultural coaching helps you to develop a broader understanding of different cultures and their particularities. This improves your ability to behave appropriately in different situations and helps you to develop respect and understanding for people from other cultures.
  • Strengthening leadership skills:
Do you lead a team? In coaching, you will develop your own leadership style in order to work successfully with an international team.

Is intercultural coaching the same as intercultural training?

No, intercultural coaching is not the same as intercultural training, although both are aimed at improving intercultural competence.

Intercultural training is usually a structured workshop or course in which participants are prepared for interacting with people from other cultures. Topics such as cultural differences and similarities, cultural stereotypes and prejudices, cultural norms and values, cultural communication and conflict management are covered. The aim of intercultural training is to improve participants’ intercultural competence.

Intercultural coaching, on the other hand, is a personal development process that focuses on a person’s individual needs and challenges. An intercultural coach works with a person to improve their ability to operate successfully in an intercultural environment. The coach helps the person to improve their intercultural competence and sensitivity by helping them to recognise and adapt their own patterns of thinking and behaviour. The coach can also assist in developing strategies to overcome obstacles in intercultural communication and co-operation.

Overall, both intercultural training and intercultural coaching can help to improve intercultural competence and promote successful cooperation in a multicultural environment.

The role of the coach in intercultural coaching

In intercultural coaching, an intercultural expert guides you through a structured process to promote your personal development in intercultural issues. The coaching is tailored to your individual needs and therefore varies according to your requirements and your own goals.

The following points can be part of intercultural coaching:

  • Development of personal goals
  • Development of a leadership style in an intercultural context
  • Exercises for self-reflection
  • Dealing with conflicts
  • Receiving and giving feedback
  • Intercultural project management
